Timmins’ NOJHL franchise is between a rock and a hard place. The city and the Timmins Rock are agreeing to a new payment plan after the team did not pay nearly $50,000 for ice time and capital costs.

$38,919 relating to ice rentals and $9,346 relating to capital the city spent to refurbish areas of the McIntyre Arena.

The city had sent numerous reminders and invoices, the team says they couldn’t pay their fees because of higher costs than anticipated to run the franchise.

After a meeting with representatives from the team and the city, both sides are agreeing to a strict payment schedule of $1,304.58 over 3 years.  The city is also imposing a 1.25% interest rate on the payments.

The Rock are also instituting a pay-to-play model for the upcoming season.  Previously they were one of the only clubs in the league where players could play for free.

Councillor Noella Rinaldo and Andrew Marks stated they don’t think this is fair to other local teams who have to pay their fees every six months in advance.

Councillor Joe Campbell and Councillor Mike Doody sympathized with the club saying it’s only their first year and they deserve a chance to prove themselves and make things right.
