The Big Event Mining Expo is at the McIntyre arena this week, and they’re living up to their name.

This year’s event will have close to 400 exhibits, with over a hundred of them outdoors. This includes live events such as the Jackleg Competitions, machine demonstrations, and the new Sandy McIntyre Claim Post Challenge, which involves canoeing across Pearl Lake.

Jay Cornelson, a Canadian Mining expo sales representative, said it’s going to be an interesting competition.

“It’s going to be celebrating the original pioneers who actually made the original claims and discovered the big Dome and found the Kidd discovery,” he said.

They will be launching an investment forum and luncheon for businessmen and community members alike, where they will be discussing how northerners can take advantage of all the precious minerals underneath us.

Some Keynote speakers include Mary Long-Irwin, Executive Director of Northern Ontario Angels , and Alan Coutts, the President and CEO of Noront Resources. Noront is a Canadian company that has the largest land position in the Ring of Fire. Cornelson says we’ll found out exactly what the Ring of Fire has in store for our region.

“[The Ring of Fire] is bigger than Fort McCurry; this is bigger than the oil sands. Once it comes into production it’s probably one of the biggest exploration and mining opportunities ever in the history of Canada,” he said.

There will be a job fair for hopefuls looking to get into the industry as well as for those who are looking to broaden their horizons within it.  In addition, there will be international partners and companies looking to learn more about our profitable area.

The Expo takes place in and around the McIntyre Arena on Wednesday, June 1st and Thursday June 2nd, with a third location accessible by shuttles provided. The event closes at 4pm Thursday evening. For more information, go to their website at www.canadianminingexpo.com.
