Don’t expect to do any shopping on July 1st, 2017 in Timmins.

Timmins city council is shooting down a request by the local Walmart store to be open for Canada Day.

Lenay van Boxtel, an Assistant Manager at the store, wrote to council for support, saying the store is looking for ways to serve the community and make the Stars and Thunder festival more enjoyable.

“It has come to my attention that we are able to offer all of the items on the ‘allowed list’ that has been posted on www.starsandthunder.com,” van Boxtel wrote.

“And I would like customers to have access to these items the whole week.”

The proposal was to be open from 9:00am to 5:00pm, but would keep all specialty departments—pharmacy, tire, oil and lube department, vision centre, wireless, photo lab—closed for the day.

While there was no formal vote on the matter, council says it wouldn’t be fair to their workers who also deserve the day off.
