**MNRF NEWS RELEASE**

We are reminding the public to be fire smart this long weekend. It’s fire season and wildfires occur every year from human actions such as campfires and setting off fireworks. Whether you plan to spend the weekend lounging, or celebrating, know the rules for safe outdoor fires and fireworks. Remember, if you light it, you are responsible for it.

Cleaning on your mind? If you plan on burning yard waste and other debris remember grass fires ignite easily, spread rapidly, and may lead to personal injury, property damage or loss. Residents are reminded of the following rules while burning outdoor fires:

  • Fires cannot be started sooner than two hours before sunset and must be extinguished no later than two hours after sunrise.
  • An adult must always tend the fire until extinguished.
  • Tools such as a shovel or water must be available to put the fire out.
  • The fire must be at least two metres from things that can easily be set on fire

Planning a campfire? We are reminding public to follow municipal burnings restrictions and bylaws, and use the following tips to have a safe, enjoyable experience:

  • Build fires on bare soil or exposed rock in a location sheltered from the wind.
  • Construct fires away from the forest or things that can easily be set on fire.
  • Keep the fire small.
  • Have an adult tend the fire until extinguished.
  • Have a shovel, or water available to put the fire out.

Want to celebrate with fireworks?

  • Choose an area away from things that can easily set on fire – gravel or over water are both good options
  • After setting the fireworks, check the area for hot residue and ensure it’s put out
  • Have firefighting equipment nearby and ready.
