The Porcupine Dante Club was filled with local business owners, BIA members and community leaders last night during the BIA AGM and Awards Ceremony.

Businesses, new and old, were celebrated for their achievements, leadership and continuing effort to make downtown Timmins a thriving area.

Three new Board members will be added to the BIA Board this November. Eleven new businesses were opened in Timmins this past year, and two have expanded.

BIA President Jamie Roach praised the growth in tourism downtown during many events that took place over the year. He also acknowledged the problems the downtown area is facing, with empty buildings and a rise in crime. He assured the audience that the BIA is working tirelessly to find solutions to these problems and that they are grappling with an issue that belongs to the whole community. He said there are lots of people who are trying to make downtown a safer place for everyone.

The Awards Ceremony began with awards for new businesses in Timmins. These winners were Pure Beauty by Cassie, Fitness and Nutrition, Mylo Solace and Rockhouse Studio.

Awards were handed out for businesses with new downtown locations: Plan A Timmins, Quantum Realty Services Ltd., Hart Esthetics, Timmins Minor Hockey Association, and the Literacy Network Northeast.

New business expansions were celebrated as well, with awards going out to: Christopher’s Coffee House,Cy Rheault Construction Ltd., Rivera Represents and Don’s Pizzeria.

The Community Partner Award went to the Daily Press.

The Business Community Supporter Award went to Bermuda Tan.

The Leadership Award was given to Andrew Marks.

The Remi Boileau “Very Best” Award went to the Timmins Flower Shop.

The Lewis P. Currie Award was given to Mary Ellen Pauli.
