**FEDNOR NEWS RELEASE**

Investing in community and cultural infrastructure plays a key role in supporting dynamic and inclusive communities. These facilities provide communities with places where families can play, neighbours can gather, and Canadians can celebrate the many cultures that make up our great country.

Today, the Government of Canada is proud to highlight the results of its $10.4 million investment in Northern Ontario communities supporting the renovation, expansion and improvement of existing community and cultural infrastructure, including support to ensure a better future for Indigenous Peoples and promote a clean growth economy.

The funding supported 167 community projects, including upgrades to parks, playgrounds, recreation trails, community centres and cultural facilities in towns, cities and First Nations across the North.

Thanks to this federal support, Northern Ontario families now have safer places in which their children may play, socialize or exercise, while community centres and organizations are enhancing services and programming for recreational and cultural activities, as well as for special events. These community spaces support local economic activity, improve access to public spaces in Canadian neighbourhoods, and build strong and more inclusive communities.

The support for these projects was provided through Canada 150 Community Infrastructure Program (CIP 150) in celebration of Canada’s 150th birthday and was delivered in Northern Ontario through FedNor. The CIP 150 came to a close on March 31, 2018.

Quotes

“Our investments in community-building projects to celebrate Canada’s 150th anniversary have achieved tremendous results. We marked this milestone by improving the places that bring us together—the places that allow us to stay fit, unwind and connect with our friends and neighbours. In a country where people come from every corner of the world, these communal spaces allow us to establish the bonds of common understanding and friendship. As such, they truly embody the values of openness, diversity and inclusion that define all Canadians.”
