The South Porcupine Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) would like to remind snowmobilers to obey the rules of the road and trails while venturing out this winter.

Here are a few tips to consider before heading out on the trails.

  • The driver must be at least 12 years old
  • Have a valid driver’s licence or motorized snow vehicle operator’s licence (MSVOL)
  • The snowmobile must be registered and have insurance

Where snowmobilers can ride depends on their age and type of licence they possess.

  • 12 years old or older with a valid MSVOL can drive on snowmobile trails only
  • 16 years old or older with a valid Ontario’s driver’s licence can drive on snowmobile trails, across a road where permitted and on roadways where permitted
  • Under 12 years old can drive a snowmobile on private property only.

Also be mindful of where you’re riding and adhere to the speed limits.

  • 50 km/h on snowmobile trails
  • 50 km/h on roads where the speed limit is over 50km/h
  • 20 km/h on roads where the speed limit is 50km/h or less
  • 20 km/h in any public park or exhibition grounds

It’s the rider’s responsibility to check with their local municipality regarding snowmobile by-laws for roads within its boundaries. Some municipalities prohibit snowmobiles from being operated on boulevards and sidewalks and have restricted hours of nightly operation.
