Timmins’ own Frank Mahovlich will be one of four Toronto Maple Leafs put into Legend’s Row Thursday afternoon.

The Toronto Sun reports the ceremony will go at 5:30pm in front of the Air Canada Centre in Toronto.

“I’m honoured to be a member of this group that’s in front of the building,” he told Rogers Media Thursday morning, “They’re all great men, all great hockey players, they all contributed immensely and it’s an honour to be included in that group and especially honoured that I came from Timmins, Ontario.”

Mahovlich spoke of the 1960’s Maple Leafs dynasty that won four Stanley Cups and how six of them will now be immortalized at the ACC.

One of them is going into the row with him—along with Wendel Clark and Charlie Conacher—his former roommate of nine years, Red Kelly.

“We had become great friends ever since,” Mahovlich says of Kelly, “I see him quite often and to be there with Red is a real honour and I’m looking forward to it.”

However, there’s one player from that era that Mahovlich says belongs up there with the rest.

“The one disappointing thing is that Allan Stanley’s not there,” he said, “He was another boy from Timmins and he certainly belongs.”

Speaking of great locals, Mahovlich will be the third player in the row from our region with Rouyn-Noranda’s Dave Keon and Cochrane’s Tim Horton.

“We had some great players (in our region),” Mahovlich adds, “Course Billy Barilko was a stand out.”

One of many, that is for sure. He says locally, the Schumacher Lions Club played a big role in his development.

“It was really the Schumacher Lions Club that really supported me almost in everything I endeavoured to do,” he said.

“We had the Schumacher Lions baseball team, the swimming pool (where) I became a great swimmer. I won the Northern Ontario 100 metres in New Liskeard with the Lions Club swimming pool. Then of course, the hockey team, they supported the hockey team.”

Other than sports, Mahovlich credited the education he received in Schumacher, mentioning Mr. Percy Boyce.

“They put me on my feet and got me going,” he said, “I had some great teachers over the years at Schumacher High and Schumacher Public School.”
