Local taxi owners to present to Police Board Monday

The Timmins Police Services Board will hear from two local taxi company owners in the ongoing saga regarding taxi licenses.

Earlier this year, Board Member John Curley mentioned he received complaints from residents claiming the wait for a cab was too long. And with Stars and Thunder on the horizon, Curley believed it was well-needed.

Northern Taxi’s Dauda Raji and Vet’s Taxi’s Richard Lafleur will both give presentations to the board.

Afterwards, the agenda indicates Police Chief John Gauthier will release a report into taxi services.

The current by-law states the limit is 60 plates for Timmins. Northern has 11, while Vet’s has the rest at their disposal—though it’s said the Vet’s drivers are freelance brokers who choose to use the Vet’s dispatch system.

Back in June, the TPS Board said while they agree there’s plenty on the road, they voted at looking into getting 10 accessible taxi licenses for people with accessibility issues with city council’s support.
