It’s been approximately two months since Timmins-James Bay MP Charlie Angus embarked on his quest to become the next leader of the New Democratic Party.

And in that time, Angus says he’s learned quite a bit about the people in this country.

He’s also learned about the politics of other nations and says there needs to be a tougher stance taken on leaders like US President Donald Trump.

Angus says Trump’s attack on softwood lumber could be “economically devastating across the country.”

“We need to be a little tougher in Ottawa, and certainly as a New Democratic leader, you’re going to see I’m going to be practical but a very fiery leader,” he told local media at a gathering Friday morning.

Another problem brought up is the amount of contract work out there.  Angus says it’s undermining the gains in the middle class.

“For me, my focus is going to be on the real economy, on the issues that working people,” he adds, stating the party will re-address that “through the changes in the tax code, through using where we can take government incentives that right now, are going to giant companies like Bombardier executives, where they get to pocket millions of dollars of taxpayers money.”

“I would claw every cent of that back.”

The next leadership debate takes place in Sudbury on May 27th.

The NDP choose a new leader in October.
