New Chief named in Attawapiskat

Residents in Attawapiskat have elected Ignace Gull as their new Chief.

Gull won an election held on Saturday in the James Bay community with 244 votes, beating out former Chief Bruce Shisheesh who came in 4th out of 5 candidates.

Shisheesh nabbed 61 votes.

Paul Wesley came 2nd with 81 votes, Mike Koostachin locked up 3rd spot with 68 and Joseph Wheesk was 5th with 58 votes.

Residents also elected a new council and deputy chief.  The Deputy Chief is now Louis Edwards.

Now members of council in Attawapiskat are Annabella Iahtail (head councillor), Andrew Koostachin, Elizabeth Tookate, Robert Nakogee, Steve Hookimaw, Maggie Koostachin, Sylvia Koostachin Metatawabin, Roger Nakogee, Jerry Nakogee, Louis Sutherland and Roseline (Rosie) Koostachin.
