Council is grudgingly agreeing to see if converting the Cameron & Wilson intersection would clear the congestion.

One of the city’s busiest intersections is turning into an all-way stop. The intersection is arguably one of the busiest and often congested at it’s peak times.  Mayor Steve Black says he brought this to council attention during his previous tenure as a council member.  He says a report then showed the intersection was unsuitable for 4-way stop conversion.

“It is the number one problem intersection identified via residential and public feedback. I did consider a traffic light synchronized with the other lights but this is a much cheaper attempt at solving the issue.”

Although most of council opted to not comment, Councillor Marks says he’s willing to try the idea but isn’t warm on the idea.

“I absolutely see issues at a 4-way stop when you’ve got the red light.  Eventually when it gets very busy, you can see the backlog that can happen, then the 4-way stop shuts down.”

In 2008, Director of Public Works, Luc Duval said a 4-way stop would cause long lineups on Wilson going so far as too put out a Request for Proposal for a $15,000 traffic study of the area.  It also came back saying the intersection didn’t meet the criteria.

As a councillor for Ward 5, Mayor Steve Black also requested council look into this intersection.  It was then agreed to convert Preston and Cameron into a 4-way stop.
