If you’re unfamiliar with the name “Auston Matthews” you probably didn’t watch any hockey whatsoever during the 2015-16 season.

The American prodigy has been regarded as the sport’s top prospect from the moment Connor McDavid and Jack Eichel went 1-2 last year and he’s virtually a lock to go No. 1 to the Toronto Maple Leafs in the 2016 NHL Draft.

Matthews had been honing his skills with the U.S. National Development Program but elected to play professionally in Switzerland last season rather than attending college or play major junior.

The skilled, two-way centre uses his size and strength to protect the puck in the offensive zone, while also priding himself on being difficult to go up against in his own end.

“He looks like a prototypical No. 1 centre,” Matthews’ most recent coach Marc Crawford says. “He’s got that package.”

2nd Overall: Winnipeg Jets

With the 2nd overall pick, the Winnipeg Jets select Patrik Laine. #NHLDraft #NHL

From: Tampere, Finland
Current Team: Tappara Tampere
Position: Left Winger
Shoots: Right
Height: 6-foot-4
Weight: 206 pounds
Twitter account: @PatrikLaine29
NHL Central Scouting Rank (European): 2nd

Report via Sportsnet:

Patrik Laine might be the closest thing to Alex Ovechkin since the Russian superstar broke into the league more than a decade ago.

Laine, one of the most promising prospects to come out of Finland in a quarter century, is an offensive juggernaut guaranteed to be one of the first players off the board on June 24.

He has the size, speed, shot and hockey sense to make an immediate impact in the NHL.

4th Overall: Edmonton Oilers

With the 4th overall pick, the #Oilers select Jesse Puljujärvi. #NHLDraft #NHL

Current Team: Karpat
Position: Right Winger
Shoots: Right
Height: 6-foot-4
Weight: 203 pounds
Twitter account: @JessePuljujarvi
NHL Central Scouting Rank (European): 3rd

Report via Sportsnet:

Jesse Puljujarvi hasn’t gotten quite as much attention as Patrik Laine in the months leading up to the draft, but the two are very similar players. Both giant, skilled right-shot wingers dangerous in all areas of the ice – one of the only differences is Puljujarvi plays on the right side at even strength while Laine prefers to be on his off wing.

“Puljujarvi is the ultimate power forward package,” says director of NHL Central Scouting Dan Marr. “He is a big, mobile, highly skilled, well-rounded winger who is both a scorer and a playmaker. He is a powerful skater with excellent offensive instincts, puck skills and determination.”

5th Overall: Vancouver Canucks

With the 5th pick, the #Canucks select Olli Juolevi. #NHL #NHLDraft

Position: Defence

NHL Central Scouting Rank (North American): 5th

Report via Sportsnet:

Most of the discussion surrounding the 2016 NHL Draft has focused on top forward prospects such as Auston Matthews and Patrik Laine, but there are some emerging defencemen who should be picked in the top 10.

One of those players is Olli Juolevi, who had a breakout year in the Ontario Hockey League in his first season in North America.

6th Overall: Calgary Flames

With the 6th overall pick the #Flames select Matthew Tkachuk. #NHL #NHLDraft

Current Team: London Knights, OHL
Position: Left Winger
Shoots: Left
Height: 6-foot-2
Weight: 200 pounds
Twitter account: @TKACHUKycheese_
NHL Central Scouting Rank (North America) : 2nd

Report via Sportsnet:

Matthew Tkachuk has been described as an ideal modern day power forward, with a solid combination of size, finesse, intelligence and a willingness to put in work in the dirty areas.

“Tkachuk is unique in that he brings both skill and a physical package to game situations,” according to director of NHL Central Scouting Dan Marr. “He possesses elite hockey sense and vision, has a very good scoring touch and makes players around him better. One of the best puck protection players eligible for the 2016 NHL Draft, he is difficult to check and willing to go to the hard areas to score goals.”

His favorite NHL player is Sidney Crosby and he compares himself to fellow American James van Riemsdyk in terms of his style of play. When you hear that it makes perfect sense when you see how strong he is on the puck down low.

9th Overall: Montreal Canadiens

With the 9th overall pick, the #Canadiens select Mikhail Sergachev. #NHLDraft #NHL

A photo posted by Sportsnet (@sportsnet) on

Age on June 24: 17 (turns 18 on June 25)
From: Nizhnekamsk, Russia
Current Team: Windsor Spitfires, OHL
Position: Defence
Shoots: Left
Height: 6-foot-2
Weight: 208 pounds
NHL Central Scouting Rank (North American): 8th

Report via Sportsnet:

Sergachev is defined by his three-zone play, confidence, and creativity with the puck. But perhaps his best asset is how calm he is, even when facing significant pressure.

He is a very controlled player, especially when he needs to make split-second decisions, and is patient when he needs to drive the puck up ice, make a breakout pass, or maintain puck possession.

He’s a fairly physical (and smart) player too. The tenacious Russian is very aggressive and consistently uses his big frame to angle off opponents and win puck battles.

“His read-and-react game is fast,” Central Scouting’s Dan Marr told NHL.com. “He’s able to transition quickly. He’s got that focus on the ice, and he’s a guy you don’t catch out of position. It is a lot tougher to beat him 1-on-1 now than it was earlier in the year.”

His all-around play helped him win the Max Kaminsky Trophy in his first junior season in Canada as the most outstanding OHL defenceman. Past winners include Drew Doughty, Aaron Ekblad, and Dougie Hamilton.

11th Overall: Ottawa Senators

The Ottawa #Senators moved up to the 11th overall pick and drafted Logan Brown. #NHLDraft #NHL

Shoots: Left
Height: 6-foot-6
Weight: 218 pounds
From: Raleigh, NC.
Twitter: @21LBrown
NHL Central Scouting Rank (North America): 7th

Report via Sportsnet:

In addition to being the son of Jeff Brown—a man who racked up 585 points in 747 NHL games—Logan is a graduate of the Jr. St. Louis Blues.

His father coached him for years, and he did it with help from all-star friends Al MacInnis and Keith Tkachuk.

While Logan now plies his trade with the Windsor Spitfires under the guidance of former NHL veteran Bob Boughner, Jeff has lent his tutelage to the Ottawa 67s—serving as their head coach since 2014.

A giant prospect who has moved up in the draft rankings all year, Logan Brown has good speed for a player of his size — and he’s the son of a former NHLer who played 747 games in the league.

Brown is one of the most intriguing NHL prospects of the 2016 draft class
