A few years ago, Rembert Brown was writing for Grantland
& he did a recap of the 1985 American Music Awards.

When you read it piece, yes, it has elements of comedy
but the underlying thesis: Prince was King.

He took home the awards for Favourite Pop/Rock Album
and Favourite Black Album for “Purple Rain”
(over Lionel Richie’s “Can’t Slow Down” & Michael Jackson’s “Thriller”)

AND he won for Favourite Black Single (“When Doves Cry”) over
Billy Ocean’s “Caribbean Queen” & Tina Turner’s “What’s Love Got To Do With It”.

He may not have won EVERY award that night
(i.e. lost out Favourite Male Pop/Rock Artist to Lionel Richie and
Favourite Soul/R&B Artist to Michael Jackson) but the ones he did win
solidified his legacy.
