recylcle

The city’s new recycling contract is staying in Timmins. Public Works is finalizing a deal with Northern Environmental Services (NES) to sort recyclables in the city and stop shipping it to Sudbury.

Director of Public Works, Luc Duval says the entire activity was budgeted for $500,000 but this new contract will save them $70,000 this year alone.  He says it could climb even higher once it’s kicked in for a full year. The new contract begins as of June 1st, 2016.

Since the city put the co-collection program into place, recycling alone is up 50%.  The city can now also process 11 types of recyclables instead of 4 when the program started. NES will also have a $10,000 allowance in case they need to store extra recyclables or for any emergency.

City Council was unanimous with praise for the deal with a local company, pointing out how far they’ve come.

Meanwhile, the city is also happy to save money on the contamination fees imposed by the Sudbury sorter.  It cost the city can extra $40,000 because residents were throwing garbage in the recycling bins.
