phoneOn January 4, 2016, the Timmins Police Service received multiple reports of phone fraud from residents.

The phone calls involve residents being contacted by an individual claiming to be the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA).

The call originates from a “1-888” number, and the caller claims that the resident has taxes owing and that funds must be provided immediately to avoid the seizure of assets such as funds, homes, and vehicles. The caller then asks that funds be provided by prepaid credit card or money transfer.

The Timmins Police Service reminds residents that the Canada Revenue Agency has established practices and policies in place when contacting residents in order to ensure personal information is secure. The CRA will not request payment by prepaid credit card or money transfers. The most common method of communication by the CRA is by registered mail.

Residents should always take steps to verify the caller before giving out any personal or financial information. To confirm the authenticity of a call received, residents may contact the Canada Revenue Agency at 1-800-959-8281.

Those believing they have been a victim of fraud or unknowingly provided financial information should contact the Timmins Police Service at 705-264-1201 or the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501.
