The Timmins Economic Development center wants to make small businesses aware of the services they provide.

TEDC is supported by the city of Timmins and helps businesses take advantage of the resources and grants which are available to them.

Along with business start ups and business expansion, they also provide help for not-for-profit organization to grow within the community.

Entrepreneurship, farming and agriculture, and mining supply and equipment are just some of the industries the TEDC are helping to develop in Timmins.

The new program called Starter Company has helped almost 60 young entrepreneurs get started.

CEO Christy Marinig says anyone between the ages of 18-29 who are not attending school can take advantage of the program. They are provided with mentors, help with a business plan and they are eligible to apply for a $5000 micro grant.

They also provide the program Summer company for students and others aged 15-29 who want to start a business during the summer.

In farming and agriculture, TEDC is working with the University of Guelph and Kapuskasing Experimental Farm  to put together a crop trials project.

The goal is to “determine what products grow best in our climate and to have a scientific validation of what the yield could be to attract larger farmers.” The project is in planning stages now and will take three years to complete
