timmins fire departmentBe sure your smoke detectors and carbon monoxide alarms are working, the Timmins Fire Department will be checking them.

Timmins Chief Fire Prevention Officer Rock Rice says starting Friday, May 1st and all the way up to October 31st, fire crews will be canvassing the community to check and see if residents have working smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors.

Officials say this has been going on for a long time, and they’re cracking down this year to make sure both devices are in working order in homes and businesses.

This, after Ontario passed a law last October, making it mandatory carbon monoxide alarms to be near sleeping areas in any home or an apartment with six or less units.

Rice says the government gave residents six months from the time the law was passed to comply.

Officials have split the city into four parts, and crews will go street-by-street and if you’re not home and want the inspection done, crews will leave a document with a number on it to call.

“If you want fire prevention to go, that’s fine also.  We’ll set up an appointment with when it’s more convenient for the homeowner,” he said.
