“WE WILL TURN NO CHILD AWAY”

How your kid chooses to spend their after-school time can shape their adult life. Because not all families can afford to put their kid into after school programs, a local non-profit organization is hoping to give equal opportunity to every kid in Timmins by opening up the first ever full-time youth center.
Andrea DiTullio, CEO of Artemis Youth Center explains

She says, Canada’s 2014 Child Active Report Card got a failing grade of D, and prompting the group to take on the challenge of tackling the childhood obesity epidemic in Timmins.

Although the plan is to put a dent in childhood obesity while breaking down the barriers of race, gender, size and disability. DiTullio says AYC is NOT just about physical programming but a center that offers the complete package for Timmins youth.

With 7 different programs, DiTullio  explains how 3 distinct programs will play a crucial role in your child’s life

1. Social Programming

2. Physical Programming

3. Cognitive  Programming

The full-time Artemis Youth Center plans to be be open from Monday to Saturday throughout the school year from 4pm untl 10pm. In the summertime, the center will be open 10am-10pm

DiTullio says thanks to their affiliation with Cross Fit Kids, AYC will be a place where kids can have access to brand new exercise equipment while having fun with new and exciting exercises that don’t feel like routine.

The AYC center reached an agreement with their current community partner, Timmins Police Service. TPS will send officers to AYC, dressed in plain clothing to come and workout with the children. After throwing down during a workout, the plan is for the youth and officers to sit down and discuss issues such as bullying and drugs.

CEO Andrea DiTullio says, the goal is to provide kids with an environment that doesn’t resemble a classroom but fosters a healthy place to exercise, do homework, receive tutoring and mentoring

DiTullio says Timmins Police partners will workout with the kids in plain clothing- discussing life, bullying and drugs

She adds, the purpose of the officer dressing out of uniform is so the officer can” reach the kids on a different level”. She says, by not wearing their uniforms, the police will seem more approachable and less intimidating to the youth.
